The OCF is a non-profit organization. Its primary objective is the development and promotion of open source and peer-to-peer monetary and financial systems. Ultimately the goal is to facilitate sound economic activity based on a sound monetary and financial system, that brings entrepreneurs and savers/investors together under conditions that are favorable to and reduce the costs for both. A key activity of the OCF is the development of software which can be used for the above purpose and which is made available to the public free of charge.

The activities of the OCF are designed to serve the public as a whole in accordance with its constitution. Although projected as a loose association of professionals, academics and software engineers, anyone identifying with the organization's mission and goals is welcomed as a member.
